Why is sustainable seafood good for… people?

Fish and seafood are an important source of protein and are often part of a balanced diet. For about 3 billion people worldwide – mostly in developing countries – fish and seafood are indispensable sources of protein. [1] Now is the time to sustainably secure these protein sources.

Yes, fish isn’t just tasty but also nutritious and healthy: just 150g can provide 50-60% of an adult’s recommended daily intake of protein. In 2010 fish constituted 16.7% of animal protein consumed globally but this quantity can make up to 50% in developing countries [2] – as fish is still a relatively cheap source of protein there – even for people living in poverty. [3]

Fish doesn’t only contain easily digestible, high value protein levels and a large quantity of essential amino acids: even its fat, containing so-called omega-3 fatty acids, has health benefits. It increases the elasticity of blood vessels in the human body. Some studies even claim that it can prevent heart attacks [4] and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. [5]

Fish will only stay a healthy food stuff for us in the future if we can, together, move global fishing into a sustainable relationship with this valuable commodity – and that’s not just for us here in Europe but also for people in developing countries where a high proportion of people are dependent on fish as both a livelihood and source of food. As a consumer, you can help by only buying sustainable fish and seafood products.
