With no direct access to the sea, the seafood industry in Austria is limited to freshwater – mainly aquaculture and processing Currently, 3,200 tonnes of freshwater fish is produced annually. The main focus is carp and trout production: carp are farmed in about 190 fish ponds, over an area of ca. 2,700 ha. (about 800 tonnes) and there are about 200 fish ponds producing trout (ca. 2,000 tonnes). Contrary to this, there is an in-country requirement for fish, crab and mollusc of about 70,000 tonnes. This is covered up to 94% by imports. The level of self-sufficiency is therefore about 5%. If you’d like to consider organic quality when buying Austrian fish, we’d recommend the Arge Biofisch. Here, fish farming is carried out strictly in abidance with the guidelines for organic aquaculture. This makes enjoying fish 100% sustainable!
